Joe Viglione created Visual Radio in 1992, putting it into production in 1995. Our first guest was Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship. Between our radio and television programs we’ve interviewed over 1,000 guests. Called “groundbreaking” by the Woburn Advocate when it launched in 1995, the program has had the distinction of being called “the best show on public access in America.”

Tonight, March 18, 2020 we are creating a new website – Visual-Radio.net highlighting current shows, upcoming shows, and our new Classic Visual Radio compiling the old footage in a documentary style.

‘Visual Radio’ founder started early

November 9, 2008 Text size – +

Joe Viglione of Medford was just 15 years old in 1969 when he produced his first issue of Varulven, a fan magazine featuring interviews and film and music reviews. A collector of 8mm science fiction and fantasy films, Viglione was also an aspiring filmmaker and musician whose original songs first aired on WBCN-FM when he was 17.

While his magazine is no longer in production, Viglione has since founded a record label by the same name, worked as a radio station programming director, and continued writing about films and the Boston music scene. Locally, however, Viglione may be best known for his public access television show, “Visual Radio,” which is broadcast in 18 towns including Hamilton, Malden, Salem, Wenham, and Winthrop. A weekly segment airs in Manhattan.

Since launching “Visual Radio” in 1995, Viglione has produced more than 400 shows featuring interviews, concerts, and lectures by local authors, politicians, and community activists.

Brad Meltzer with Joe Viglione at Book Expo

6:47 pm March 19, 2020 – here I am a professional writer having fun posting photographs with no text…go figure. As Yoko Ono said “There’s no place to start like the start” so… OK, why not start The Visual Radio story. here

My first films were Vlad the Count Possessed and The Return of Vlad filmed in Arlington, Massachusetts probably around 1971…I can find the dates somewhere. The first radio show was in 1978 – the Auguste Hours on WCUW Worcester.

In 1979 I waltzed in to New England Music City in Kenmore Square and asked the B.U. student behind the counter that I had never met before, Mark Rosenfield, to spin the 45 they had highlighted. So he puts The Guitarmaster on – the Garage Record of the Year in the Real Paper, and I jump on the chair, start dancing, and when the record ended waltzed out the door without saying a word
.

Well, Mr. Rosenfeld phoned me up probably finding my info in the E.P.’s insert and he and a colleague who is now a big shot at HBO …ho hum…who eventually moved in with us. His wife would be waiting for me in my bed when I got home “You look so handsome in your security guard uniform” (of course I did) …I would say “What are you doing in my bed?” She would reply “I’m keeping it warm for you.” Furious I would say “XXX…get out!” so since she couldn’t have me she ran off and married the young director, ho hum…life goes on…. Fee Fi Fo Fum why would I want HER in my bed?

So after Rosenfeld and his then-friend did a documentary on yours truly in the basement of 30 Dragon Court, Woburn, the band house, and his friend moves in to the house and starts playing keyboard for my band.

That’s how you find a keyboard player, jump on a chair and start singing. But more than that, the guys knew that my grandmother lived in Somerville and they asked if she would sponsor us to have our TV show in Somerville, thus was born TV Eye was born that ran for 1 year in 1979.

and that was the start of my work in public access television.

  ¶ 9:08 AMFriday, December 31, 2004 R.I.P. Johnny Carson – 1/23/09

What can be said about numero uno that others won’t say better? I’ll let Sid Smith of the Chicago Tribune, their arts critic, do the honors:

Published January 23, 2005, 2:32 PM CST

Some may be able to top Johnny’s achievements, but it is impossible to top Johnny himself as he is the archetype, the original. Sure, Steve Allen launched as host of the show in the birthyear of Visual Radio’s host – 1954 – and Jack Paar got 5 years in from 1957-1962

but Mr. Carson’s 20 year run established the format of entertainer and his hour of guests, monologues, and mayhem (planned or by divine intervention) that developed on your tv screen.
In the film version of Bill Carter’s “The Late Shift” Kathy Bates talks about Leno “eating the steak but not wanting to know how the cows are slaughtered” (paraphrased). In her Helen Kushnick persona she declares that she pushed Johnny Carson out.

A user of the movie board http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116835/
says “I tell you what, after watching this movie, then watching either the Letterman or Leno show, all I want to do is crack open my Johnny Carson DVDs and see the real thing” and that
unsolicited comment just about says it all.

Here’s an interesting interview with Betty Thomas on “The Late Shift”
http://industrycentral.net/director_interviews/BT01.HTM

My best friend growing up was addicted to Johnny Carson. Of course, we being eleven or twelve years old, there was a certain cache to being able to stay up that late at night. Johnny was the reason, or excuse.

R.I.P. – may your work inspire us to find better ways to entertain in the new Millennium, Johnny.

¶ 9:42 PMTuesday, May 11, 2004 The Story of Visual Radio!

Joe Viglione’s original presentation of “radio for your tv”.

Visual Radio began when Joe Viglione was Director of Research for North America Media Corporation, a production company which developed content for PBS. The idea began in 1992 when Joe became a member of Woburn Cable TV but didn’t launch until early 1995 when Marty Balin & The Jefferson Starship allowed a concert and interview to air. Jo Jo Gun at WGIR in Manchester, New Hampshire was the next guest, followed by Bobby Hebb, composer of “Sunny” and the Grammy Award winning “A Natural Man”.

Ten years later over 325 hours of programming has been generated featuring guests such as Richard Branson, Linda Ronstadt, Lou Reed, Vincent Bugliosi, Professor Stephen Hawking, Curt Schilling of The Boston Red Sox, Bill Press, author Dennis Lehane, Suzanne Vega, author Edward Hallowell, Laura Numeroff, Spiderman/Jurassic Park scriptwriter David Koepp, and hundreds of other wonderful guests.

Secrets of Sant’Angelo

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Fortune may be blind, but misfortune sees us all too clearly…At least that’s what the townspeople of Sant’Angelo D’Asso have come to believe. The small Italian village, an hour’s train ride south of Siena, has been hit with a spate of sfortuna-bad luck-that hasn’t let up all season. Endless rain, debilitating influenza, and bizarre deaths have befallen this town, leaving its people with a diehard faith in the power of curses-and a deep longing for a miracle. Now that miracle may have swept into town, in the form of two mysterious newcomers who bring with them an unexpectedly hot sun in the middle of December. Rosa Spina Innocenti is a sinfully beautiful woman full of incredible stories. Her grown son, Emanuelle Mosè, may be quiet and withdrawn, but he seems to possesses the ability to heal people and animals. In a short time, the pair convince those eager to believe that they’ve been sent by a higher being-and wind up inspiring faith in a community hungry for spiritual delight and good fortune. But just as the townspeople begin to succumb to the mystical appeal of this charming duo, another stranger arrives. And soon his presence threatens not only to come between one betrothed couple, but to tear apart a close-knit community that will do nearly anything-even turn on each other-for proof of a power greater than themselves.

Author Biography:

Jeff Shapiro is the author of the acclaimed novel Renato’s Luck. Married to an Italian woman, he has lived in the countryside near Siena since 1991. He teaches English at a language university in Siena and creative writing at the Siena School for Liberal Arts.

July 31, 2012

Landing big names
By Diana Brown, 2/1/2004

Cable television host Joseph Viglione launched his Visual Radio Television show nine years ago in Woburn. He has lined up some pretty impressive interviews along the way, which number 300 now and have aired in many local towns. Virgin Airlines founder Richard Branson, singers Judy Collins and Suzanne Vega, performance artist Laurie Anderson, ”Mystic River” author Dennis Lehane, professor Stephen Hawking, and band members from The Doors, Grand Funk Railroad, The Rolling Stones, The Cars, and The Jefferson Starship, are just a sample of the notables Viglione has had on his show. Viglione writes for All Media Guide and is working on a book about Lou Reed’s 1973 Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal Tour
